The Graduate Program at UFRJ has history and tradition. The Master in Communication and Culture of UFRJ was created in 1973. The initiative, led by Professor Emmanuel Carneiro Leão, was supported by the teachers Muniz Sodré and Márcio Tavares D"Amaral, who are still part of the teaching staff of the Program. The then director of the School of Communication of UFRJ, José Simeão Leal, widely encouraged colleagues to set up an innovative course. Carneiro Leão, Sodré and Tavares D"Amaral implemented a course with a strong interdisciplinary character, establishing intense dialogues with the philosophy, the psychoanalysis, semiology, anthropology, history and literature to understand the communication and its technologies as a center for reflection on culture, politics, aesthetics, subject and language in contemporary societies. Ten years later, in 1983, the PhD was created, following the same proposal.
Having as the area of ??concentration "Communication and Culture", the basic assumption of the Program is that the field of communication imposes itself in modern and contemporary societies as a structuring force of new forms of socialization, subjectivation and aesthetic production, vectorized by Market and advanced information technologies, with broad implications for the humanistic field.
