N-IMAGEM (Center for Image Technology) has gathered, since 1991, at the UFRJ"s School of Communication, researchers who think and who create images. Between experience and theory, N-IMAGEM devises, through the history of devices, of the new configurations of the subject, of the aesthetics of interactive art, and of the morphogenesis of the image, an epistemological network that combines aesthetics, technique, and cognitive perception, in which categories of time, space, and subject are interwoven with new concepts, which are fundamental for the understanding of contemporary culture: the technical image, digital narratives, simulation, multimedia, hypermedia, dynamic systems of visualization, virtual reality, and cyberspace. Comprehending technologies of the image as unprecedented forms of hybridization of differentiated fields of knowledge allows for the interaction of multidisciplinary researchers who seek to reevaluate the study of communication. The activities schedule at N-IMAGEM includes research, courses, seminars, and lectures with Brazilian and foreign theorists and artists, in addition to publications as well as audiovisual and multimedia production. The objectives proposed by N-IMAGEM are: (1) to create a space of theoretical-practical investigation of a transdisciplinary character, which favors the elaboration of new forms of creation, production, and thinking of the image; (2) to analyze the alterations provoked by images, in particular those produced by advanced technologies, in cultural paradigms; and (3) to problematize the role of the image in the exercise of thought.
